7 Pin Connection Problems On Travel Trailer

by Carl
(Spring, TX)

When I connect the 7 pin connection to my tow vehicle, sometimes one of the turn signal will not work, and sometimes the brakes will not work. In the past, after sanding the connections and "jiggling" the connection, it would work. Now it no longer works properly. I have tail lights, but not turn signals nor brakes.

Could it be that the ground is loose where it connects to my trailer? Where do the various wires connect to my trailer? I have a 1989 Holiday Rambler Alumalite 32 travel trailer.

Thanks,

ANSWER: Greetings Carl thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

Yes a loose ground can cause the problems that you are experiencing with your trailer lights. The first thing you should check is the ground on your Travel Trailer. Normally the ground wire will be a white wire. Follow that wire to the ground on your trailer and make sure that the ground is tight clean and is attached to clean bare metal.

The fact that when you shake the connections they will work could mean that the plug on your tow vehicle or your Travel Trailer is not making proper connections. You may have to replace them to get the lights working properly. When replacing the connectors the main problem is determining which wire goes to what. Not all trailer or tow vehicles wiring is color coded in a standard way so you may need to use a 12 Volt Circuit Tester to trace the wiring.

To get some great information on properly wiring your Travel Trailer and tow vehicle you should visit etrailer.com's Trailer Wiring Diagrams Page. It should be quite helpful to you if you actually have to install some trailer connectors.

Hope this helps.
