How Do I Install the pop up lift cable on my RV?

We have taken the old lift cable out, and are having trouble getting the tube to line up to get it back together. Is there a trick or a way to get these together and lined up correctly?

Our camper is a 1998 Rockwood. We can not get the springs pushed back into the channel. They came out of there, why won't they go back in? What did we do wrong? Thanx!
