I Just Purchased A New TV For My RV Do I Still Need A Digital TV Converter Box?

by MARVIN
(SANTA CRUZ, CA)

I PURCHASED A NEW TV DO I HAVE TO GET A CONVERTER BOX

I HAVE A BAT WING ANTENA ON 1999 COACH. DO I HAVE TO CHANGE ANTENAS FOR THE NEW TV SERVICE?

WHO DOES THIS WORK?

ANSWER Greetings Marvin thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

I have good news for you Marvin. Since you purchased a brand New TV, you will not need a Digital TV Converter Box. All new TVs have a built in Digital TV Tuner.

I have even better news for you; the Bat Wing Antenna you have on your RV is perfect for receiving digital TV signals.

The hardest part of this whole process is going to be getting your old TV out of the RV. I am assuming that your old TV is connected with Coax cable. Once you get the old TV out all you have to do is take the cable off of the back of the old TV and hook it up to the New TV.

Once you get it hooked up and you get the antenna up, all you have to do is turn your New TV on and go to the TV setup menu and have the TV scan for the channels in your area. Now each time you move the RV to a different campground or location you are going to have to perform a channel scan so the TV will pick up the signals for that area.

As far as getting your old TV out, I cannot help you much there as different RV manufacturers mounted the TVs in the cabinets in different ways. Getting the old TV out of the cabinet could be hard or easy depending on how it is mounted. Also you may have to modify the TV cabinet so the New TV will fit. This could require you getting in touch with a good carpenter and having them modify the cabinet for you. You may also need to purchase a new TV Mounting System that works for your particular TV.

Not all LCDs have digital tuners
by: long time camper

I just purchased a 2010 Kodiak by Dutchmen Model KS-22 (I think dealer sold me a lemon but that's another story). Anyway, it came with a Jensen LCD TV on swivel wall mount and Jensen DVD/CD/MP3 stereo. Well the TV does NOT have a digital tuner! A real bummer because not I need yet another box and remote! Oh, well just be careful of the TVs you buy, even the LCD TVs.

Caution
by: Bruce Stone

Not all TV's are being sold with digital tuners. I'm looking for a 12 volt replacement TV for my van and have run into quite a few on the internet for sale without digital tuners. Stick with a reputable dealer or you could get stung.

Editors Note According to US regulations all TVs currently being sold in the US that do not have Digital TV Tuners, must be clearly marked with a disclaimer on the TV packaging as well as on the TV itself. The chances of finding a new TV right now that does not have a digital TV tuner is very slim.

If you bought a TV that was not clearly marked with the disclaimer, I would take it back to where I bought it from and let them know that they are not complying with government regulations.

Hope this helps.
