RV Air Conditioner Only Works Intermittently

by Liza Tuttle
(Riverview, FL, USA)

Editors Note: This question is in reference to a Four Winds Hurricane Motorhome.

My rooftop a/c works intermittent on my RV. It's a 2005 model and it doesn't have a place to hold fluids. Could it be the compressor? Help!! The back unit works fine. It makes a sound but doesn't turn over.

Thanks so much!!

ANSWER: Greetings Liza thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

Based on the limited information you have provided me I cannot tell you for sure what the actual problem is. You do not tell me if the fan blows but you do not get cold air, etc.

I am going to assume that you the fluid you are talking about is Freon. Adding Freon to your Air Conditioner is not a do-it-yourself job and should be performed by a Certified RV Technician. Your problem may or may not be due to low Freon.

Since you said it sounds like the A/C is trying to start up but won't; the problem could be due to a bad start or run capacitor on the unit. If the capacitors are good then the problem could be a bad compressor.

There are also several other problems that could be causing your intermittent air conditioner operations. I am afraid that you are going to have to "bite the bullet" and take your Motorhome in and have the A/C problem checked out by someone that can properly diagnose and repair the problem.

Sorry that I could not be of more help.
