The Radio in My Rv Doesn't Work

The Radio in My Rv Doesn't Work

Editor's Note: This question is in reference to a 2001 Kit Companion Fifth Wheel Trailer

The radio has been tested and is OK. I also have no power to the accessory jack. I believe they are powered by the same circuit, but not sure of that. The radio used to work. I have no owners manual to refer for information. I replaced the batteries in the fifth wheel, but do not recall if the radio quit working before or after they were replaced.

ANSWER: Hi Jesse thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

Since you have tested the radio and you know it works when it has power to it then we can eliminate it as the problem.

It sounds like you have popped a fuse somewhere in that 12 volt DC circuit. The first thing you need to do is locate your RV's electrical compartment where all the fuses and circuit breakers are located.

I cannot tell you the exact location of your RV's electrical compartment as the locations vary by manufacturer and model of RV. It could be in an interior cabinet in your RV or exterior storage compartment on the RV. You will know it when you see it. Once you locate the compartment check for any blown fuses and replace them as needed.

If you do not find any blown fuses you may have an in-line fuse on the wiring leading to the radio and 12 volt accessory plug. You may have to hunt around to find this fuse.

One last thing I would do is go back and check your house batteries and make sure that you did not miss hooking up some wires to the batteries. Normally the radio should not be hooked directly to the batteries, but I have seen it done that way especially if it was an after-market add on.

Hope this helps

No Power to the Radio

I have the same problem, I tested the fuses and they are all good. Is it possible the 5th wheel has a negative ground on the frame that is the cause?

Check fuses
by: Anonymous

When checking the fuses, don't just look at them and assume they are okay. Check them with a 12v test light or remove each one out and check with an DVOM (meter).

If the fuse is good and you are using a test light it should light up on both sides of the fuse. If it does not light up on one side of the fuse then it is bad (open). If it does not light up on each side of the fuse, then you need to trace that circuit to find an open or another switch controlling the power.

I prefer the 12v test light because it is quick and shows instantly that the circuit is live. Good luck.
