Want To Buy Travel Trailer That Has Been Sitting For 25 Years

by Anonymous

I am considering purchasing a used 1985 Rolls International travel trailer. It has been sitting in the same spot since 1985. I plan on transporting the trailer from place to place. What would you recommend that I check out before purchasing this trailer? Since it has sat for so long will it be dangerous to transport?

Thank you.

ANSWER: Thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

Let me first address your question on getting this travel trailer ready for transport on the road. Mechanically wise at a minimum you will have to pack the wheel bearings and replace the Trailer Tires. There is no way you should take this trailer on the road with 25 year old tires.

You will also need to check all of the exterior lights to make sure that they all function properly. You will also need to inspect the hitch system to make sure that it is in good working order, not rusted, corroded, broken, etc.

Legal wise you will need to get it registered and insured before ever going on the road with it.

Since you have not bought this unit yet you need to perform a thorough Used RV inspection on it. You can either hire an outside company to perform this inspection or you can visit our Used RV Inspection Page and follow inspection guidelines that I have outlined there before making your final purchasing decision.

I hope this helps.
