I Have No AC Power To The Slide Outs On My 5th Wheel Trailer

by Lonnie Disotell
(Alamo Ga)

I have recently purchased a 1992 Newmar Kountry Star fifth wheel travel trailer. It is a 40' with two slide outs. The DC circuits work but the AC circuits do not in either slide. There is no AC to the wall plugs or the AC light fixture above the dining room table.

I have checked the breakers. There is power at the breaker but no power at the junction box where power enters the slides. Do you know if there is a separate switch or shutoff for the slides. I did not get any manuals with it when I purchased it. I would hate to pay an electrician to check it out just to find it is turned off somewhere. Thanks for any help you can offer.

ANSWER: Greetings Lonnie thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

It sounds like you have done a good job of trying to locate the problem. The only other thing I suggest is to see if you have blown a GFCI Outlet in your 5th wheel.

A GFCI Outlet. looks just like a normal electrical outlet except that it has two buttons on it and acts like a circuit breaker when there is a ground fault in the electrical system in the RV. When this GFCI outlet trips it also shuts down other electrical outlets in the RV. Normally these GFCI outlets are located in the bathroom, or kitchen area of the RV, but they can also be located in another part of the RV.

Look around the RV and see if any of these outlets are blown. The GFCI outlet has two buttons one is a test button and the other is the reset button. Make sure you press the reset button. If it blows again soon after you reset it I would suggest that you get a qualified RV Technician to take a look at the RVs 120 volt electrical system to find the problem.

If all else fails you may have to take the 5th wheel in to get it checked out by a Certified RV Technician.

I hope that this information has been helpful to you.

We have an 04 newmar mountainaire 5th wheel. Living room and dining room slides all the sudden had no ac power. This post solved our issue. Gcfi in bathroom had tripped. No clue why.

Thank you for you suggestions. There are no GFI outlets on this circuit. By chance I found the slide out circuits have in conjunction with a Circuit breaker, there is also a 15 AMP Type S fuse for each slideout. The fuse for the bedroom slide is located in the about six inches off the floor in right front closet. The fuse for the living / dinning room slide is located in the kitchen cabinet next to the slide. Hopefully this information will be helpful to someone out there.
