The Generator on My 1986 Minnie Winnie Motorhome Does Not Power My 120 Volt Appliances

by Kurt Kightlinger
(West Aliquippa, PA, USA)

I have a 1986 24" Minnie Winnie. When the generator is on it only seems to charge the 24v system. None of the 120v outlets work unless you plug it in. I am wondering why the system won't run any of the 120v outlets?

ANSWER: Greetings Kurt thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

To answer your first question when the generator on your Motorhome is running it should provide power to all of your 120 volt outlets and appliances just as if you were plugged into shore power.

The problem could be a bad Electric Converter on your Motorhome or something as simple as a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. The fact that your house batteries are being charged does not mean that the converter is fully functional.

You need to go into the electrical compartment in your RV and check for any loose wiring, blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers. Also, depending on the model of generator you have there may also be a couple of circuit breakers on the generator itself; you need to check them to make sure that they have not been tripped.

If you do not find any problems in the areas that I mentioned above then your best bet is to take your Motorhome in and have a certified RV Technician track down and repair the problem.

Just a note here you say that the battery system in your RV is 24 volts, that is incorrect your Motorhome has a 12 volt DC house battery system.

I hope you get this problem resolved soon.
