Where Can I Find The VIN Number On a 1976 Coachman Travel Trailer?

by Anonymous

Where is the VIN number on a 1976 Coachman Travel Trailer 18 ft camper, I've found one I would like to buy but the seller states he can't find the vin number to get a title, where should he look?

ANSWER: Greetings thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

The first place you should look is on the trailer tongue and frame railing on the trailer itself. In most cases you will find a riveted plaque with VIN number or it may even be stamped in the metal of the tongue itself.

You might also try looking at the frame at the rear of the trailer. If you are still not able to find the VIN number read the answer that I gave to the question below for more place to look.

Where Can I Find The Serial Number For My Travel Trailer?

If for some reason you are unable to locate the VIN, you may have to contact your states Department Of Motor Vehicles and find out what options you have to transfer ownership of the Travel Trailer.

You do not need to title single-axle trailers. I.E. utility trailers, pop-up trailers, and travel trailers weighing 1500 or less pounds.

No title needed

I saw that someone incorrectly stated that you can't register a trailer without a title. Here is a chat transcript with myself and the Alabama Dept of Revenue:

(03:56:05 PM) Richard E Anglin III: I am planning on buying a used travel trailer. Many ads state they have no title and will give a bill of sale. Will this be a problem when I try to register one in my name?

(03:56:44 PM) Nancy: Thank you for contacting the Alabama Department of Revenue, I will be happy to assist you with that today.
(03:57:06 PM) Nancy: You do not need a title unless it is one that can be driven.
(03:58:23 PM) Richard E Anglin III: Is it ok if it is from out of state, such as the nearby areas of Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana?
(03:58:42 PM) Nancy: Yes.
(03:59:22 PM) Richard E Anglin III: Thank you very much, that is what I needed to know. Have a good day!
