How do I research a VIN for a travel trailer?

ANSWER Greetings JeanneMarie thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

Since you have a travel trailer, it will not be as easy to get the information you are requesting. If you have a motorhome you can use services such as CARFAX to run a Free CARFAX Record Check. But even CARFAX does not provide the names of the previous owners, they only provide the number of previous owners, plus a lot of other useful information such as Title Problems, Accident and Service History, etc.

Unfortunately you cannot use CARFAX for looking up the histories on Travel Trailers, 5th Wheels, Tent Trailers or Campers. In fact I could not find a service that looks up the histories for non-motorized RVs.

For the information on the previous owner of your 5th wheel, I would suggest that you either contact the DMV or the insurance company that insures your 5th wheel trailer to see if they can provide you the information. Don't be surprised however if they refuse to provide you the name and address information on the previous owners. Due to all the privacy laws in the US, they may be prohibited from providing this information to you.

You purchased a camper from someone you know just get them to either go with you or sign you a POA on the assigned serial number year and make of camper and go to the DMV. Apply for lost title and as long as there aren't any lien's you'll get one. If you don't have a clue who the last one to register the camper is you'll likely have to go through a broker to get it tracked down.

My friend bought a 5th wheel from someone in Nebraska. It was in the flood. He has since misplaced title and bill of sale. How can we get a title for this
