I Want To Buy A 1988 Winnebago Superchief RV Is This A Good Buy?

I am looking to purchase a 1988 Winnebago Superchief. the price is $ 6500.00 is this worth buying? I know is a Chevy engine with 69,000 miles. Help with some input I am not sure if this would be a good buy.

ANSWER Hi Iris, you do not tell me the length of this Class A Motorhome. The Superchief came in 3 lengths that year 27', 31' and 34'. So, as far as price goes based on the mileage and the year of this RV it is priced in the midrange. I have searched for the same year and model RV on the internet and I found some that are selling for less and some that are selling for more.

What you pay for a used RV should be based on a few main points.

1. The age of the RV.
2. The mileage on the RV.
3. The overall condition of the RV.
4. What accessories are on the RV.

Right now you are looking at an RV that is over 20 years old, so it is very important that you do not jump right into buying it, because you like it. You need to do some research and you also need to perform a used RV Inspection to ensure that the RV is in good shape and that you won't have any expensive repair surprises going down the road.

Again, I do not know the size of the RV you are looking at and I also do not know what it is equipped with. But you should take a moment and go to NADA Guides and check to see if this RV is priced right based on year, mileage, equipment, etc.

You should also perform a Used RV Inspection prior to actually making your final purchase decision. Here are a couple of links to the Used RV Inspection Section of our website. You know first off that is first Winnie with basement, mine currently has 58,432 on it and no smog. I shit canned it at 30,000. We live in ours full time. Other than foam ceiling falling down, which we replaced with f.r.p panels everything worked, 400 turbo runs cool and shifts smooth. I did install bigger trans. cooler and oil cooler. Have some swelling on outside skin panels from leaking windows. Installed new coil springs and air bags, shocks and steering stabilizer. And respringed steer safe. Tire pressure is critical for max fuel use. Love Ours would love diesel pusher but is it worth it.. We're in Washington state and live in ohio the rockies never slowed us down even with dolley and mini on back. We,ve now put 30,00 + on her and are heading home in may.

I got mine for $2000 it has 2 working A/c units and a 6500 watt onan genset with 300!hours runs mint. Engine a ford 460 runs well but has manifold leak. Has full gally with everything working. Fridge is kinda nasty tho. Has full bedroom with working central vac working. Tons of storage in cabinets and full basement storage. Full bath with tub and enclosure. Stocked with washer and dryer working. Awnings in good shape but was coming free of the body so removed for now.
It will need tires. The carpet will be Yanked come spring and replaced with wood pergo type laminate. She's just ugly. Has air horns & remote working joystick spotlight. Ivepanted all the oak cabinets white and replaced hardware. I'll do a backsplash in head and galley with fake tile stickies and paint. The radios need replacing plugs and wires. 460 has 45k miles. The outside is faded and has a little delam but who cares. I'll make the inside a palace all for $4500. I love it and it will be my full time home one day. Has tow pkg to pull my lifted jeep toad.

I think I got a deal. What you all think???

I have had my 1988 Super Chief since 1994. I took camping my 2 boys, niece, and the entire high school football team including cheer leaders in it.

It is a great RV. Just last year I had it re-painted, and a new interior installed. It runs like new. I like the 4 wheel disc brakes, dual AC units, and the front bed. I tow my boat and jeep with it with no issues. I really have no complaints about this unit....Actually the football team follow us up to the mountains when we went camping, but just the same, it is a terrific rig.

I have a 89 Deluxe Super Chief 40ft
I have been thinking about selling it and that about what I would ask for mine as well. They are good strong runners, its just huge.

There is a recall on 1988 Winnebago superchief gas tanks. They have had some leak at the seams and/or baffles. It is a free replacement if found to be leaking. Email Winnebago for info.

hello, I have an 88 winny 28' with 28000 km I bought it for 5500$. I put in laminate flooring and new carpet up front. k&N air filter and msd igniton. This winnebago runs great. the 454 chevy runs at about 14mpg. Go for it winnebago is a very good model, they are built very good. excellent motorhome, chad

I have a 88 31ft superchief for sale and I am selling it for 4900 it runs great but some of the headliner needs to be fixed if I had that repaired i would put it up to 5600. At the price you will pay make sure it all works and by the way mine has only 45000 miles. But it will all depend on what you really want.

hi, i've owned my super chief which is the 31ft model and i bought it for three thousand and it had alot of water damaged to it before i owned it and i put proably a couple thouseand in it and it runs great i took it all the way to minnesota and it ran great all the way there and back to cincinnati i think you should go for it its a great buy and they are so much fun to travel in.
