Remember, an RV is a large, complex machine. If you want to make the most of your travel experience, you need to learn how to use it and how to stay safe. While it may be tempting to throw your travel duffel bags inside and see where the road leads, hit the brakes for a few minutes. Use the tips below to improve your RVing experience.

Invest in a Water Filter

While there may be potable water at your campsite, you never know what it will taste like. If you purchase and install a water filter, you can stay healthy and have decent-tasting water while you travel. Also, most filters can be purchased at affordable prices, so you don’t have to invest too much.

Practice Driving Your RV

Before venturing out and hitting the open road, you need to become familiar and comfortable driving an RV. These are large vehicles and can be nerve-wracking if you have never driven them before.

Being comfortable is important, and this will help keep passenger’s calm. Take some time to take your RV out for a few test drives before leaving for a big trip. This is going to pay off in the long run.

Keep Shoes Outside

No one wants to spend their whole vacation cleaning. To avoid tracking in dirt and debris, be sure to keep shoes outside the RV. You can even make a “rule” that no one wears shoes in your RV. You can easily kick these off on the step and walk around inside in socks or bare feet. This is going to save you a lot of time and let you enjoy your travels even more

Take-Along Spare Parts and Tools

While you don’t have to have any and everything you can imagine, having a few basic spare parts and tools can be beneficial. Consider where you are traveling, too, to determine how much you should take along.

If you are going to be off the beaten path, having more on-hand is always better. However, if you will be in an area where you can easily get what you need if something happens, this tip isn’t as important.

Allow for Plenty of Stopping Distance

Remember, your RV is large. Because of this, you need plenty of time and space to come to a full stop. You are not driving a typical passenger vehicle. Be sure you leave plenty of space between you and the car ahead of you.

Check the Tires Often

If you take your RV out on the open road, make sure you carefully inspect each tire before leaving. While you are on the road, be sure to check the tires too. If there is an issue, make sure you address it before getting back on the road.

Quarter Tank is the Same as an Empty Tank

A smart mental trick to ensure you don’t reach empty without realizing it is by treating a quarter gas tank as empty. When you see the gauge reach this point, stop to refill as soon as you can.

Invest in Fresh Seals

The rubber seals that are on your RV are designed to keep the weather outside the vehicle. You need to ensure that these remain in good condition. As time passes, these will age, so be sure you have them replaced when needed.

When it comes to your RV, you can do more than a few things to prepare it for the open road. Be sure to keep the information here in mind, which will help ensure your RV experience is a good one. Being informed is one of the best ways to ensure you make the most of your time on the road.
