I want to tow my Jeep Liberty, but, don't want to tow bar or a car carrier. I "think" I want a used car tow dolly.

Where could I look for one and what should I be aware of, such as tow capacity, brakes, storage, etc.

ANSWER: Hi Jack I would look at the Tow Dollies Available on eBay.

The first thing you need to do is determine that the vehicle you are going to be towing the Jeep Liberty with is rated to tow its weight plus the weight of the dolly. You also need to make sure the tow Dolly you get is rated to tow the weight of your Jeep Liberty.

For more information on weight ratings etc. when it comes to towing I would suggest that you read the article Trailer and RV Weight Demystified.

I would also strongly suggest that you buy a tow dolly that has its own braking system. If you do not get a tow dolly with brakes the braking distance of your tow vehicle will increase to the point that it may be unsafe in an emergency braking situation.

2019 Demco Kar Kaddy SS Tow Dolly - LIKE NEW - Top of the line tow dolly perfect for RV use. Used 3 times
The tongue folds and the loading ramps stow in the upright position. When fully extended the length is 133 inches long and folds for storage to 66 inches. Made of galvanized steel (won't rust) it has disc brakes, using a surge brake system. Also has chrome wheels with radial tires. Safety chains and tire straps and title in hand.

This dolly has a steerable axle and when you release the push pin for towing the wheels will pivots which allows for a tighter turning radius and follows the same turn as your RV reducing the drag on the dolly tires.

Before you buy a dolly, check to see if your jeep can be pulled on a dolly. My Wrangler was not to be pulled with 2 wheels up. Hard on the transfer case. with a jeep its either 4 up (on a trailer) or 4 down (tow bar)

According to the user manual you can damage the Jeep Liberty if you tow it with only 2 wheels on the ground. Itr is designed to be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground. I have been towing my 2004 Liberty since it was new and it tows fine with a tow bar.
